Lithium is a silvery-white alkali metal element that is soft, easily darkened by oxidation, and the lightest of all metallic elements. Compared with other alkali metals, lithium has the least compressibility, the greatest hardness, and the highest melting point. Lithium metal is chemically very active and can react with most non-metals except rare gases under certain conditions, but not as readily as other alkali metals. Lithium is also the only alkali metal element that reacts with nitrogen at room temperature. Lithium has a large abundance in nature, ranking 27th, with about 0.0065% in the Earth's crust. |
